The Dole Avenue Reconstruction Project was a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at improving roadway conditions, pedestrian safety, and utility services. The City of Crystal Lake selected Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA) to provide design engineering services for this critical project.
This project required the full reconstruction of Dole Avenue, including new pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and driveway approaches. The design also accounted for the approach to Route 14, ensuring proper maintenance of traffic to address the required lane closure on Dole Avenue.
Beyond surface-level improvements, the project delivered essential utility upgrades to enhance the community’s infrastructure. GHA’s design included: new water main, storm sewer system enhancements, sanitary sewer extension, bicycle-friendly design solutions at Route 14, where GHA evaluated and proposed multiple alternatives to improve connectivity and safety for cyclists.
Given the project’s complexity, GHA approached the design with a phased construction, ensuring minimal disruption to residents and businesses. A detailed traffic control plan was developed, allowing for the safe and efficient staging of work while maintaining local access. Several detours were implemented during construction, including routes requiring IDOT approval for use along U.S. Route 14, ensuring efficient and coordinated traffic movement throughout the project.
Through careful IDOT coordination, constructability reviews, and compliance with MFT funding requirements, GHA delivered a seamless and efficient design that set the stage for a successful reconstruction.
