Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided civil engineering, surveying, and construction phase services for improvements to the dome facility at the Park District of Highland Park. The project supported the conversion of the existing soccer dome into Club Pickle & Padel, a recreational facility featuring pickleball and padel courts.

The existing facility previously operated without permanent sanitary sewer service and did not have a fire suppression system. The primary objective of GHA’s work was to extend sanitary sewer and watermain service to the facility. Utility extension design was complicated by the site’s location on a former municipal landfill, requiring the utilities to be designed to avoid penetrations into the underlying capped landfill. Work also included design of the interior playing surface and accessibility improvements to the parking lot.

The sanitary sewer was extended from an existing municipal system located on adjacent property to the south. Multiple utility extension scenarios were evaluated to determine the most feasible service connection.

Construction required coordination with existing utilities and site constraints. Installation of the sanitary sewer included crossing a drainage channel along a shared property line with a neighboring property, which was completed using trenchless construction methods. The watermain installation also required tunneling beneath the adjacent four-lane divided highway.
