Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) was retained by the City of Crystal Lake for the Pedestrian Connections to the Prairie Trail Enhancement Project, with funding secured through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP).
The project focused on the construction of a new sidewalk and associated infrastructure improvements along three key corridors: Virginia Road, Congress Parkway, and Main Street. The primary objectives include installing new pedestrian connections and upgrading existing sidewalks to meet ADA requirements at strategic locations. Additionally, the initiative aims to enhance safety by upgrading the existing traffic signal at Mainstreet/Commonwealth Drive/Shopping Center Back Entrance, incorporating pedestrian signal heads and pavement markings for safer crossings.
The comprehensive scope of work includes various elements such as curb and gutter removal and installation; hot-mix asphalt surface work; driveway reconstruction; ADA installations for accessibility; storm sewer installation; landscaping restoration; and the installation of new pedestrian traffic signals.
Throughout design and construction, GHA coordinated closely with McHenry County Division of Transportation to connect into their concurrent traffic signal and ADA improvement project along Virginia Road. Each signalized intersection was integrated with the County’s ADA-compliant corners to ensure continuous pedestrian accessibility.
Through careful coordination with IDOT and the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), constructability reviews, and compliance with MFT funding requirements, GHA delivered a seamless and efficient design that set the stage for a successful reconstruction.
