Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided Phase I, II, and III engineering services for the Hart Road / Main Street Shared-Use Path project for the Village of Barrington. The project completed a gap in the pedestrian network along Main Street and Hart Road, connecting Barrington High School and the Field of Dreams area. The project was completed with federal funding and required adherence to Illinois Division of Transportation (IDOT) design and approval processes.
Phase I engineering included survey, traffic studies, environmental documentation, and evaluation of alignment alternatives for the multi-use path.
Phase II services included preparation of final plans, specifications, and cost estimates. The design incorporated a multi-use path along Main Street and Hart Road, pedestrian signal improvements at the Hart Road and Main Street intersection. Through coordination with Lake County Department of Transportation (LCDOT) the path was accommodated on a new LCDOT bridge crossing a tributary of Flint Creek. Coordination was required with IDOT, Lake County Division of Transportation, Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers due to jurisdictional roadways and permitting requirements.
Design considerations included limited right-of-way, utility conflicts, and impacts to adjacent properties and existing trees. Drainage design addressed floodplain and floodway conditions and accounted for additional impervious area within the corridor.
Phase III services included construction engineering and coordination with agencies and stakeholders during implementation. Construction staging and traffic control were planned to limit disruption, particularly near Barrington High School.
