Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided interim leadership services for Grayslake School District 46, serving as the Director of Operations and Maintenance throughout the 2024–2025 school year. Responsibilities included daily oversight of maintenance and custodial operations across multiple school facilities, coordination of capital improvement projects, and regular communication with district leadership, building administrators, and vendors.

GHA staff managed active construction and renovation work across the district, including contractor oversight, schedule tracking, field condition review, and procurement support. They participated in project meetings, reviewed submittals, and monitored work progress to ensure alignment with project scopes and timelines.

In addition to operational oversight, GHA supported long-term department planning by assisting with organizational structure review, staffing evaluation, and defining future department needs. The role also included internal coaching to clarify responsibilities, support seasonal operations, and improve service delivery.

Other responsibilities included assisting with onboarding and training of new department staff, coordinating responses to emergency work tickets, and supporting inspection readiness, equipment service scheduling, and vendor compliance activities.

This work followed a district-wide recovery effort at Grayslake Middle School, which experienced major damage during a severe winter storm in January 2024. After pipes froze and burst, causing widespread flooding, boiler failures, and mechanical issues, GHA stepped in to lead the emergency response. Two weeks into the project, the district’s Director of Facilities resigned, and GHA’s role expanded to include full interim oversight. Repairs were completed three days ahead of the superintendent’s deadline, despite extensive damage and sub-zero interior temperatures. This effort was recognized with Wisconsin Association of School Business Officials (WASBO) 2024 Recovery of the Year Award.
