Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) has a rich history, and Mark Hamilton, PLS, is a key part of its story. The son of GHA’s co-founder, Robert Hamilton, Mark’s career path at the company has been a remarkable one. Starting in his early days, his journey to becoming a licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) exemplifies his dedication and commitment. Witnessing GHA’s evolution and growth firsthand has provided Mark with a unique learning experience. This experience has given him a deep understanding of the surveying landscape and instilled a profound commitment to his profession.
Early Engagement with GHA
From an early age, Mark was immersed in the world of GHA, beginning with simple tasks like carrying sections of a leveling rod when he was six years old. “I remember those early days vividly,” Mark recalls, “from handling survey equipment to the…we’ll call it distinctive smell of ammonia in the blueprint room. It was more than just being around; it was about absorbing and understanding the essence of GHA.”
Seeing the company’s growth and the transformation of his fellow team members over time has reinforced Mark’s appreciation for GHA’s culture. “Seeing the same faces from when I was a kid now managing large-scale projects speaks volumes about the environment at GHA,” Mark notes. “It’s about growth, not just in terms of projects but in the personal and professional development of everyone involved.”
Mark’s experience at GHA exemplifies the company’s commitment to fostering talent internally. His progression, from tackling minor tasks to leading significant projects, mirrors GHA’s philosophy of fostering employee development. Mark recalls, “Even the smallest tasks, like when I helped change lightbulbs in the warehouse when I was thirteen years old, were stepping stones, teaching me the value that every contribution has to our projects.”
Career Development
These early experiences at GHA laid the groundwork for Mark’s pursuit of his Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in 2020. The path to becoming a PLS was demanding, filled with evenings spent in the classroom after long workdays, demonstrating a work ethic that extends far beyond his day-to-day office responsibilities. “The challenge was tough, but deeply rewarding,” Mark shares. “It was about pushing my limits, expanding my knowledge, and ultimately contributing in a more meaningful way to the projects at GHA.” Mark’s dedication to professional growth isn’t new. This drive can be traced back to 1998, when Mark ventured west to Lake Tahoe. That transformative year would provoke a passion for learning that continues to shape his career at GHA.
Those days at Lake Tahoe were spent carving fresh tracks down snow-covered slopes, while the evenings brought a sense of relaxation under the starlit sky of Lake Tahoe. Amidst the tranquility, a chance encounter awoke a familiar passion. Across the street from where Mark was staying, a couple was building their dream house. After seeing their excitement and the slow but steady progress of their house taking shape, a spark re-ignited within Mark. He yearned to be back in the field, eager to contribute to a project driven by such enthusiasm.
Eventually, after talking with the couple for a while, Mark offered his expertise, which they gratefully accepted. “That experience rekindled my love of surveying in a way I hadn’t anticipated,” Mark reflects. It wasn’t just the thrill of skiing that made that year unforgettable. Helping the couple’s vision come to life, brick by brick, provided a sense of fulfillment he hadn’t realized he missed. Mark’s early experiences at GHA had always stirred a passion for surveying and this newfound clarity about his professional path revived that passion.

Approach to Surveying
Surveying goes beyond measurements for Mark. “It’s about understanding the bigger picture – the entire flow and purpose of each project,” he says. Mark believes in a proactive approach, “anticipating challenges and finding innovative solutions before they arise.” This mindset enhances the quality of his surveying work and establishes GHA as a leader in delivering comprehensive solutions.
“Every survey is an opportunity to think outside the box.” Mark notes. “Our strength lies in our ability to carefully plan and execute, with the goal of consistently exceeding expectations.” GHA’s distinct approach to surveying blends strategic foresight with a commitment to high-quality, project-specific solutions. “It’s about more than delivering a service; it’s about enriching communities and tackling challenges with smart, effective solutions,” Mark concludes.
Professional Pride
Mark’s pride extends beyond his surveying expertise. He contributed to the successful implementation of GHA’s innovative CAD training program. The program goes beyond just teaching software; it streamlines our approach by ensuring every team member grasps Civil 3D and its application within GHA’s design principles. This comprehensive training prepares new employees to contribute meaningfully to projects within a week. Mark emphasizes the program’s continuous improvement: “Each year, we refine the training to enhance efficiency and verify everyone remains aligned with our evolving design standards.” As Jon Past, GHA Survey Group Leader, notes: “Mark’s work ethic is truly commendable. He’s always pushing to improve himself and the company.”
Personal Life and Values
Mark Hamilton embodies the spirit of GHA – a company where a collaborative spirit and teamwork thrive alongside a strong sense of community. Mark effortlessly balances his work life at GHA with his role as a father to three active children involved in sports and band. “It’s those quiet evenings after games or concerts, when we’re all together, that really matter. These are the moments I’ll always remember.”
He sees GHA as an extension of his family, a place where colleagues become close friends through shared experiences, both on the job and off. He reminisces fondly about after-hours computer games with colleagues like CAD Manager George Whitten, moments that cemented the bonds within the growing company. “These experiences,” Mark says, “highlight the unique culture at GHA. We support each other like family, both inside and outside the office. That’s what makes coming to work so rewarding.”
Looking Ahead
Mark Hamilton’s journey at GHA is a testament to dedication, professional growth and personal development. His story exemplifies GHA’s collaborative culture, where colleagues support and learn from each other, creating a sense of shared success. “Looking ahead, I see endless possibilities for us to innovate and improve the communities we serve,” Mark reflects. “Every project is an opportunity to leave a lasting positive mark on our communities,” he concludes.
