Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA), in conjunction with Craig Bergman Landscape Design, assisted the City of Lake Forest in completing Phase I Engineering in support of their application for Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) funds to improve and enhance East Deerpath Road.

The entire project lies within the Lake Forest Historic District, which is on the National Register for Historic Places. Accordingly, the proposed pavement and streetscape improvements, which include replacement of all the existing hardscape along this primary entryway to the City, required considerable coordination with Residents, Adjacent Business Owners, and approval from the City’s Historic Preservation Committee. In addition to the proposed hardscape improvements, additional landscaping and green infrastructure in the form of tree wells and permeable pavers are proposed for this nearly $2M project. Balancing the limited right-of-way, vaulted sidewalks, and existing business entrance locations with the desire to improve pedestrian safety and maintain on-street parking in the Commercial District provided numerous challenges for the preliminary design.

After working with a Blue-Ribbon Committee formed by the Mayor and the City’s Historic Preservation Committee, the State Historic Preservation Office found that the proposed improvements will have no adverse effect on the Historic District.
