Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided construction engineering services for two pedestrian crossing improvement projects in the Village of Mount Prospect: the IL Route 83 and Busse Avenue and Central Road and Cathy Lane intersections. These proposed improvements aimed to enhance pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow by incorporating modern safety features, including pedestrian-activated crosswalk warning systems and ADA-compliant pedestrian refuge islands.

At the IL Route 83 and Busse Avenue intersection, the project involved restricting turning movements for safety purposes by installing an updated pedestrian crosswalk with LED illuminated crosswalk signs and mast arms, and two new concrete medians and pedestrian refuge islands. Brick sidewalks were also installed to enhance streetscape aesthetics and resurfacing of IL Route 83 throughout the project limits.

The Central Road and Cathy Lane project included the widening of Central Road to allow for new left-turn lanes. Additional improvements included the installation of new concrete curbs and gutters, hot-mix asphalt resurfacing, and the application of new pavement markings. A pedestrian activated crosswalk including a rectangular rapid flashing beacon system and ADA-compliant refuge islands were also added to ensure pedestrian safety.

For both projects, GHA provided full-time construction administration and observation in accordance with IDOT procedures. The team worked closely with Village officials and local stakeholders to ensure minimal disruption during construction while meeting IDOT standards and delivering high-quality results.

Together, these improvements significantly enhanced pedestrian safety and traffic flow within Mount Prospect, reflecting GHA’s commitment to delivering modern infrastructure solutions.
