Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided professional engineering services for the Spaulding School Pavement Rehabilitation project for Gurnee School District 56. The project involved rehabilitation of the school grounds and parking lot, including the replacement of existing pavement, curbs, and sidewalks.

As part of the pavement improvements, GHA managed the removal and replacement of more than 2,700 square yards of asphalt pavement, and the replacement of 2,600 square feet of concrete sidewalk to improve accessibility and meet ADA compliance standards.

Drainage and stormwater management were crucial components of the project, with GHA overseeing the installation of 100 feet of 8-inch PVC storm sewer and 200 feet of 18-inch RCP storm sewer.

GHA’s services included preparing final engineering plans for pavement rehabilitation, curb and gutter replacement, and drainage improvements. The plans accounted for sequencing and staging requirements to align with school operations, ensuring construction occurred during the summer months, and was completed before school starting.

GHA worked with the District to identify solutions to help alleviate traffic backups onto adjacent roadways during school drop off and pickup. Multiple options were developed and reviewed with the District to determine the best solution to proceed with which was ultimately designed and constructed and in operation for the first day of school.

The construction phase was supported by full-time observation, with GHA providing a resident engineer to oversee construction operations.

The Spaulding School Pavement Rehabilitation project highlights GHA’s ability to provide tailored engineering solutions that address both the functional and operational needs of educational facilities. The project’s successful completion enhances accessibility and overall site performance for Gurnee School District 56.
