Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided construction engineering services for this infrastructure modernization project within the Old Buffalo Grove Subdivision, focusing on the complete reconstruction of a minor collector street in a residential neighborhood.

The existing storm sewer system, original to the subdivision since the 1950s, had reached the end of its serviceable life, as had the roadway. The project included full roadway reconstruction, reducing road width, and slightly adjusting the alignment for improved safety. Key improvements also involved upgrading the large-diameter storm sewer system, adding a new concrete multi-use path along the south side, implementing ADA upgrades, and completing landscape restoration. Due to the extent of the improvements, the project required one-way traffic staging and temporary detour routes.

Given the importance of Bernard Drive for residents and commuters, as well as its proximity to park district facilities and multiple school bus routes, maintaining clear communication across the entire project team was essential. This ensured that driveway closures, access limitations, and construction stages were properly scheduled to minimize disruptions and reduce closure durations.
The first section of the project (Bernard East) was completed in 2024, ahead of schedule and under budget. As one of three planned segments along the 1.4-mile corridor, its completion contributed to positive public feedback and reflected GHA’s focus on consistent communication and effective project management.
