Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided design services for the pool deck and plaza replacement project at the Hidden Creek Aquatic Center, commissioned by the Park District of Highland Park. This project involved the replacement of approximately 19,000 square feet of deteriorating concrete deck and plaza areas, originally installed in 1996.

The project addressed several critical aspects, including adjusting the slope of the deck and plaza areas to meet ADA compliance, installing foundations for sun shades, and managing the interface with the pool gutter to avoid damage during concrete removal.

GHA’s scope of services began with an existing conditions topographic survey, followed by the preparation of detailed construction documents. These documents included civil site design and engineering drawings for grading, pavement replacement, foundation installation, and drainage improvements. The design phase included a comprehensive evaluation of various repair methodologies, and consulting with Water Technology, Inc. to determine the most effective solutions.

During the bidding and negotiation phase, GHA assisted the Park District in preparing technical specifications and special provisions, assisting during the bidding process, and providing addenda and clarification as needed. In addition to coordinating with the City of Highland Park for regulatory approvals, we partnered with Williams Architects to handle the Illinois Department of Public Health permitting.

The successful completion of the design phase for the Hidden Creek Aquatic Center pool deck and plaza replacement project has set the stage for enhancing the facility’s functionality and accessibility. GHA’s thorough approach and commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions have been instrumental in preparing the project for successful construction.
