Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) provided design and construction engineering services for the Midlothian Road Watermain Improvements in Grayslake, Illinois. The project installed a 12-inch watermain connecting existing stubs at Peterson Road and the Lake County Fairgrounds, completing a key loop to improve system reliability.
The design phase included topographic surveys, alignment studies, and the preparation of preliminary and final plans. GHA coordinated permitting with multiple agencies, secured easements for private property connections, and conducted wetland delineation to minimize environmental impacts.
During construction, GHA served as the Village’s representative, providing full-time observation and enforcing contract specifications. Services included field coordination with the contractor, review of pay applications, preparation of change orders, and ongoing support for resident and agency communication.
The project required coordination with more than 10 agencies, including permitting from Lake County DOT, IDOT, Canadian National Railroad, and Metra for rights of entry and construction approval.
It also involved the installation of a 20-inch steel casing beneath the Canadian National railroad using auger and jack methods. Set approximately 25 feet deep, the casing avoided conflicts with signal infrastructure and utilities. A crane was used to manage auger spoils and equipment access.
